Epidemic equation

In medical term epidemic is defined as “the occurrence of more cases of a disease than would be expected in a community or region during a given time period.” In general term “Any disease to which humanity is weak in response and which spreads like the fire in forest consuming numbers of lives is epidemic.”

Epidemiology (the scientific and medical study of the causes and transmission of disease within a population) introduces a term “Tipping Point". This term is defined as the moment in an epidemic when a virus reaches critical mass. AIDS for an example tipped in 1982, when it went from a rare disease affecting a few gay men to a worldwide epidemic. The present epidemic ‘swine flue’ tipped first at Mexico City on March 18, 2009, which by now has converted in to 278,843 laboratory confirmed swine flue cases and 2810 human causalities all over the world.

Humanity response to epidemic is to develop the curable vaccine and till the vaccine is developed taking the preventive actions. In case of plague when the curable vaccine wasn’t available the intense epidemiological studies identified rats and more specifically their fleas as major carriers of the disease. This led to success in controlling the plague principally by limiting interactions between rats and humans.

In case of AIDS epidemic the humanity has yet not found any curable vaccine. And Behavior modification to minimize spread of AIDS virus is currently only means of controlling the epidemic. However, AIDS is predominantly as sexually transmitted disease, and till now it’s proven that behavior modification hadn’t been applied as it should have been to prevent the spread of the disease.

Now what could be the preventive action to prevent an irresponsible behavior?
