Inapt Truth - Sach Ka Samana

World’s largest epic “Mahabharata” portrays “Yudhisthira” as a man who is famous for his guts to speak nothing but the truth. However once Yudhisthira ends up speaking lie to score a much needed victory in a 18 days prolonged battle of Kurukshetra. Like Yudhisthira we too end up facing critical life situations which might force us to speak lie. However the common conditional morality established by humanity says “a lie spoken for others gain is okay”.

Looking at the 21st century, the humanity is a step forward in defining its morality. Take the example of a recently launched Hindi TV show on Star Plus titled “Sach Ka Samana – Facing the Truth”. The said show digs in to very personal past of its participants, potential enough to ruin participants’ as well as society’s way of life. But the participants willfully cooperate in the show to win money in millions. Speaking the truth in a very lucrative and in a very decisive appearance!

In one episode of the said show Urvashi Dholakiya (a TV Celebrity) was asked that “Did you ever feel that your best friend’s intention of friendship with you is you being a celebrity?” Urvashi answered ‘no’ but the Polygraph machine declared Urvashi’s answer as lie and she was out of show. Now isn’t the nature of question and willingness of Urvashi to answer the question, potential enough to damage a friendly relationship?

Previous to above question, the host Rajeev Khandelwal asked Urvashi that “have you ever enjoyed a male stripper taking off all his clothes in a party?” Before I write the answer by Urvashi let me tell you that she has children of 13 years age. Urvashi answered ‘yes’ and the Polygraph machine declared Urvashi’s answer as true. Now once again isn’t the nature of question and wiliness of Urvashi to answer is potential enough to damage a mindset of her children and to damage a mother children relationship?

The controversy over the show is increasing so the TRP of the show. Now millions sit at home and watch the expressed real life hidden practices. Aren’t these public expressions potential enough in its nature to transform the till now considered immoral practices in to acceptable practices? Isn’t the public revelation of Urvashi, a TV celebrity, enjoying a male stripper taking off all his clothes, a potential damage to the moral ground of society?

Some might argue that what is wrong expressing the truth? But if the same logic has to be followed then will it be okay to organize “Sach Ka Samana” for our children and youths to know the immoral practices by their Teachers, Family members etc.

Are we prepared for it?

  2. Sometimes, silence is more truthful than words..But then no one gives us millions on a TV show for being truly truthful - being concerned about others while being true to God and to others.

This program also reveals the truth about us - the audience which vicariously lives out its secret, forbidden desires through the lives of celebrities who themselves are aware of this and indeed play to the gallery. So, I sometimes wonder who is influencing whom. And maybe we get the celebrities we deserve.

As you point out, our children are the greatest casualties...
